James Batterson Union State Central Committee papers, 1864-1866.

Primarily correspondence requesting speakers, most commonly Henry C. Deming, by members of the Union State Central Committee during the 1864 presidential election in which Abraham Lincoln sought reelection. Letters also include names of town committee members, results of town vote canvassing, requests for or announcement of donations of money to the Central Committee, and criticism of the opposing Copperhead Party. A significant number of letters relate to efforts to ensure that soldiers in the field were able to vote. Correspondents include Joseph R. Hawley, James Dixon, and Governor William Buckingham.
